Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) by Jazgalaxy — 08 Sep 2017
Guardians Vol. 2, expanding upon the recent trend of Marvel films, is a melodrama. Much like, ironically, Drax, the film is completely incapable of not outright stating what it wants you to feel at any moment.
There is no nuance or subtext to the entire film. This is frustrating as each character in the film is given an obvious "arc" and explicitly states out loud where they are in that arc as it progresses.
As a result, the film feels as though it's "stupid". Or more accurately, made for international audiences who aren't familiar with American social cues. All that said, many of the scenes land.
If you are a seasoned film goer or, sorry, a smart person, you may find much of the film cringe-inducing. But children, and people who find films challenging will enjoy the "easy-listening" approach to GOTG Vol.
2.
