Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) by Anthony G — 13 Jul 2017
With the first film being incredibly overrated and over-hyped it was inevitable we would get a sequel.
This film like the previous is watchable but very average. Relying on catchy 80s songs and offbeat jokes to gloss over a lazy script with nothing new or interesting in the marvel universe and a film that is nothing more than a place holder before the next Avengers team up.
Like lots of these marvel movies, we get a story treading water. Star Lord's father is introduced but it's not as fun as they think it is...Kurt Russell looked like great casting but his story is bland and he is misused...I thought he was going to be a womanizing space pirate, he is not. The whole story-line is very much a campy retread of an old Star Trek episode with Pratt replacing Kirk.
Most of the action is CGI so it is hard to care after a while. Kids will find this really fun but I was wishing for a set piece or something that felt real...to ground the characters or the story but instead it is a candy coloured music video for forgotten 80s tracks that ultimately feels hollow and forgettable.
Again, not a bad film but feels like it came off the Disney conveyor belt.
