Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) by A.j. L — 14 Mar 2018
Almost an embarrassment to the previous entry, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 exaggerates all the facets we loved, in a bad way. It was comedic, but most jokes fell flat. The performances weren't as genuine as remembered.
The story flowed in the same way as #1, but the story did not compel as much. I was really underwhelmed by the new characters, specifically Taserface and Mantis. The ugly antagonist literally had no reason to be included.
He didn't help at all, and the jokes Rocket made fell flatter than Flatman from the West Coast Avengers. Chris Pratt had a decently moving performance, as Ego being his father added some emotional weight.
Gamora had some intriguing with her sister Nebula, but besides that, both characters were more one-dimensional than in the previous film. Drax was much more happy, likely to lighten the tone, as his more gloomy mood contradicted how the majority of the team carried themselves.
Rocket and baby Groot worked together pretty well, as they both worked off of each other. However, the most surprising, and best performance, was Michael Rooker as Yondu. He was utilized as more of a selfish gangster, who disliked Peter Quill.
His death was actually heartbreaking. Ego as a villain was weak, and the final duel between father and son was even weaker. 6/10.
