Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) by Johnathon W — 22 Apr 2018
Fun but slightly disappointing sequel that while doesn't quite match the original, is still well worth viewing. The cast all returns with to their characters superbly, and developed nicely in new areas, from Gamora & Nebula's bond as sisters to Peter & Rocket's strained friendship.
Of the new additions, Kurt Russell shines as Ego and you instantly buy him as Star Lord's father. Behind the camera, James Gunn brings lots of the visual thrills & fun of the original, but the story is over-stuffed with too many plot threads.
The middle section is where the movie particularly suffers, when the cast is separated and it just drags. While it is nice to see some nods for fans, it feels like a setup for the overall 'Cosmic Marvel Universe', than a movie on it's own.
Thankfully, the final act is action packed with an emotional gut punch at the end, reminding you the Guardians are about people trying to be a family. Overall, not the classic that is the original, but a bunch of fun and well-worth seeing.
