I missed this film at the cinema, so finally managed to catch it now that it's out on bluray. It's awesome. Funnier and more character-driven than the first. I cared more about the ending too. I've no idea why it ranked lower critically than the first, but it doesn't really matter.
If you enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy, and haven't seen the sequel yet, I fully recommend that you do so.
