This was definitely different from the first one. Marvel sure is taking chances with this franchise and the stories they tell. Its fine since it's a sci-fi movie, they can get away with a lot stuff.
This story is a continuation of the first movie. They didn't try to reproduce the first one which is how a sequel should be. You definitely see the characters continue to grow as they continue to work with each other.
