Review of Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) by Becky P — 04 May 2017
A simple plot and some one-note villains aren't enough to detract too much from a fun, slightly off-kilter sci-fi adventure pic, populated with a cast of likable characters. I think it's safe to assume the charismatic Chris Pratt is a movie star after anchoring this, but each Guardian gets his or her chance to shine -- particularly Rocket Raccoon and Groot, I'd say.
Ex-Troma indie director James Gunn also makes the most of Disney's ginormous budget and turns in one of the best looking films of the year. In a lot of ways, 'Guardians' is a throwback to great family entertainment of the past.
The hits just keep on coming -- from this film's retro soundtrack, and Marvel's Cinematic Universe.
