Review of Grudge Match (2013) by Cheryl B — 29 Dec 2013
The Italian Stallion vs. the Raging Bull. I'm sensing a trend this year. Nostalgia is running very high more than I can ever recall. Just look at my past reviews from this year alone. My 2013 reviews are just ramblings of a disgruntled late-20s college student.
More can be said about that but it's something to note. That's all this movie is: nostalgic ruminations of a disgruntled aging gent long past his prime. Only this time, indulging in a fantasy that's as cliched as that cop movie Righteous Kill (with De Niro and Pacino) turned out, just more contrived and stars being so old that they're just barking at each other.
The movie makes it out to be a joke, and I'm sure many of us think of it as a joke the moment we saw that trailer. But you know what? I enjoyed it. I'm old school and grew up watching movies starring these guys.
Gags are obvious and some fall flat but a few still made me chuckle here and there. I also liked how the movie acknowledges the new way of gaining fame: popular youtube videos. What an age we live in, especially when the individual can now document things that a paparazzi can only wish to capture.
