Review of Grudge Match (2013) by Manny C — 14 Apr 2014
Has it really come to this for Robert De Niro? In the horrid Grudge Match, Sylvester Stallone, 67, is Henry 'Razor' Sharp, a boxer from Pittsburgh who retired in 1983 just before a crucial match with Billy 'The Kid' McDonnen (De Niro), now 70.
These longtime rivals agree to one last match to settle the score in a script full of jokes older than both actors combined. 'Gutsy move to go without a bra,' Razor remarks. You get it. The fight scenes suck, and shameless tearjerking comes in the form of Kim Basinger as the women both men loved.
Rocky vs. Raging Bull, but it's all paycheck. There's not an ounce of pleasure in watching these two play up their iconic roles for laughs that barely happen. Grudge Match is just sad.
