Review of Grown Ups (2010) by Anthony K — 06 May 2018
Unforgivably poor "comedy" that manages to be the worst Adam Sandler film I've seen yet (seriously, worse than Jack and Jill OR Pixels). The characters are constantly portrayed and characterized one way, then in another scene act completely different (the ones who get it worst are Maya Rudolph and Salma Hayerk's characters, who you're never sure if they are supposed to be some shrill dragon lady or a put upon wife).
The conceit is that they get together over the death of a childhood....basketball....coach. And spend the weekend a a lake house. AND THAT IS IT. And maybe 40% of the movie is just reaction shots of the group laughing amiably at Adam Sandler's predictable riffing ("Nice [noun], [Pop Culture Reference" should be tatted on his fuckin face).
I can't wait to watch the second one in this master class of how not to make art.
