Review of Grown Ups (2010) by Jilie L — 27 Mar 2013
I didn't quite catch this in theaters. I wanted to, but didn't get to it. My friends said it was hilarious and I believed them because how is a movie with all of these guys getting together not funny. Well, I learned it doesn't have to be. Grown Ups is an incredibly stupid, very lame attempt at making a slapstick and surprisingly heartfelt comedy. They tried to make it work but it didn't. All that came out was a one laugh torcher chamber that is very hard to get through. Not even the likable leads can make this movie work. This actually makes me dislike them, just a little more.
This movie reminds me of another comedy that was incredibly stupid and had a cast of likable people called Hot Tub Time Machine. Although the story and the writing wasn't the best, the cast still made it so the movie still succeeded as being watchable and somewhat entertaining. I still am not the biggest fan of that movie, but you get the point.
That movie succeeded on acting alone (and yes, it was funny at times) so why can't this do it? Let me just answer that right now. It can't because it has awful writing, terrible directing, and it can't get anywhere it wants to go with that. The character sin the film aren't likable so you have no one to root for. Your just left in the dust regretting having given up your 100 minutes to watch this piece of crap. That's the best way to explain this movie, a regret, a waste of time. That's what this is. I will admit, it had it's one or two funny moments, but that's far from making up for the countless flaws in this film. It will only entertain the very simple minded.
