Review of Grown Ups 2 (2013) by Anthony K — 09 May 2018
Grown Ups 2 isn't a film. It is actually probably Adam Sandler's most experimental film. It's a series of loosely connected scenes with little to no context or point. Why do they develop beef with a frat? So that there can be a climax that.
..ties together the rest of the movies? Why is Milo Ventimiglia, a near-40 year old man, the leader of a group of a college frat boys? Avant garde. Why is there a storyline about how Chris Rock's daughter has developed virtuoso singing talent by singing in the shower? Why does Tim Robbins' entire family have this "WHAAAAAAT?" catch phrase? Why does Shaq have a prominent supporting role? When did Sandler's family move to this town, and what town are they even in? Why does Sandler's kid have a storyline where he's really good at field goal kicking for about 1.
5 minutes?? I have to give this movie a full star more than I gave the original because as much as it is an excuse for the Sandler crew to get paid for making a 'movie' together, it in no way strikes me as a vacation because it's filmed in.
..what...Vermont? Also it carries on from the original with a strangely slavish devotion, while accomplishing literally nothing. While the original was *just* bad, this one achieves something far better - it is so bad, it's great.
