Review of Groundhog Day (1993) by David S — 18 Jul 2012
My nominee for most underestimated movie. Ever. Bill Murray spends the longest day ever in Punxatawney, Pa. covering Groundhog Day. Each morning he wakes up at 6 a.m. to the sounds of I Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher.
And it's always Groundhog Day. Every day. Probably thousands of them. Phil (Murray), runs the gauntlet of emotions: from fear, anger, bewilderment, exploitation, depression, and slowly, acceptance.
Phil begins (again slowly) to grow as a person. At the beginning of the movie he seems like a world class narcissit. Seems being the operative word. There is humanity underneath the cutting words. This great film finds it, and Murray, the greatest modern comedian shows his heart for the very first time.
