Review of Groundhog Day (1993) by Tim B — 02 Feb 2015
Groundhog Day, a rare comedy with something to say about the human condition, answers the question how should we deal with life and death? Watching Bill Murray desperately work through dying and death's stages: recognition, denial, depression, anger, acceptance we see our own attitudes and behaviors only in slightly less dramatic and comedic expression.
Should I try to save the world? Can I conquer it? Should I sit back and watch it burn? Or add fuel to the fire just to feel some sense of control? Groundhog Day concludes that maybe even the most arrogant of us can let go of our fear and lust driven megalomania and embrace this life as a beautiful mystery affording the brief opportunity to love.
In fact, some of us are lucky enough to live out a slight number of days, repetitive as they may seem, allowing us to learn that to love is to give and receive untethered by the strings of fear, self-loathing, and pride.
Now if I could just get that Sunny and Cher song out of my head.
