Review of Groundhog Day (1993) by Doug M — 25 Sep 2015
I never saw Groundhog Day until this very day. It's one of those movies I missed when it came out and just never got around to although, of course, I know it is one of those films that have become a part of our cultural references.
I thought of it as just a good comedy that people use as a figure of speech for getting caught in a repetitive cycle. But now that I've seen it, I knew at some point way before it was over, that I was watching a masterpiece, one of those great movies and NOT just because, like "It's A Wonderful Life" (another of the great classics), it has a plot that has been endlessly borrowed by television shows and other movies.
It is not a movie that declares itself to be profound or important. It comes across as a story that gets to the essence of a man's nature without ever bragging about the fact. Suddenly, you realize you are watching one of the most memorable movies you will ever see.
An amusing thing for me is that, had I seen it over twenty years ago when it was released, I would be like the main character because I would have watched the movie countless times by now.
