Review of Groundhog Day (1993) by Joyce T — 13 Feb 2016
Groundhog Day.
Bill Murray & Andie McDowell are in top form in sweet & sarcastic Romantic Comedy/Drama/Fantasy with an existential twist.
Harold Ramis said that it's like Beauty & The Beast. LOL!
I saw parallels with another film we saw recently, About Time, in which the main character finds out that you cannot make someone fall in love with you. I also saw flashes of A Christmas Carol/It's a Wonderful Life, where supernatural events changed the nature of the protagonist. There is also a strong parallel to karma, the modern concept of karma, but also to the Christian concept of redemption.
A funny bit of trivia: The most amusing & last encounter between Phil Connors & "Needlenose" Ned Ryerson on the street, the "I-don't-know-where-you're-headed-but-can-you-call-in-sick?" scene, was ad-libbed.
