Review of Groundhog Day (1993) by Jordan K — 04 Mar 2016
Groundhog Day is an exceptional, defining comedy with an inventive plot, an amazing cast, engaging characters and moments, and a consistently more interesting climax - there's a reason why it's such a talked about comedy, it's one of the greatest comedies ever.
Phil Connors is a Pittsburgh weatherman who, alongside his producer and cameraman, heads to Punxsutauney for Groundhog Day coverage. He soon finds himself living the same day over and over again, starting over again at 6am each day no matter where he is, dead or alive. Phil goes to last resorts of madness and eventually love over his odd predicament.
Groundhog Day is amazing. To me, it is one of the greatest comedies of all time and is enjoyable each time you watch it. The story is rich with fresh uniqueness and is consistently engaging as each day goes on for Phil - it's a root for the main character's desire type plot. Murray shines bright in his main character role, pulling off original sarcasm turned to madness to good samaritan behavior excellently and hilariously - the entire cast is amazing and makes the film even more exceptional. Groundhog Day likes to toy with viewer moods a bit - originally chuckle provoking but as the days go by, more tragic events occur - these events seem a little off in the original mood but add more to the story and are a minor flaw. I can't complain much - Groundhog Day is an exceptional textbook example of a great comedy with a fresh new story and an amazing cast that really delivers.
