Review of Groundhog Day (1993) by Bob R — 30 Mar 2014
Groundhog Day is a pretty well renowned comedy from the early 90's, so I'm not even going to bother summarizing it in depth. I guess it won't hurt to include the basic premise. Phil is a tv reporter sent to Puxsatawney (don't know if that's even right) to report on Groundhog day. Being in the town he hates so much, he can't wait to report and just leave. Instead, a storm traps everyone in town, and he's forced to stay overnight with his crew. The next morning, he realizes he's living the exact same day over again. The day after that, it's the same situation. Knowing every day is the same with a clean slate the second he wakes up, Phil's life changes radically when he decides to take advantage of the new realm he's living in by making decisions he would never do in his boring old life. Fuck, I just said I wouldn't summarize. Oh well.
It's easy to see why Groundhog Day is regarded as a comedy classic. Bill Murray is at the top of his game here, and Harold Ramis really created a interesting concept that was perfect for comedy and just ran with it. Besides the campy 80's ish' feel to the whole thing, there's really not that much wrong with it. I'm really surprised I never fully watched it until recently, and I gotta say it definitely receives marks for it's originality. There was nothing before or after like it, and that's why movies like Groundhog Day continue to stand out. It's funny, philosophical, and just plain fun to watch. Perfect for FRIDAY NIGHT PIZZA PARTIES. Fuck I'm just way too lazy for this right now.
Groundhog Day is an innovative comedic effort from Harold Ramis, featuring a fantastic premise and awesome job done by Bill Murray.
