In its lightness, there is depth. GROUNDHOG DAY is the most though-provoking comedy-fantasy I'd seen (before the darker 'Being John Malkovich'), starring a bemused Bill Murray who in full circle captures the confusion, frustration, and acceptance of his existence in a time loop.

An inventive blend of humor in the briskest setting possible, GROUNDHOG DAY also grows of sweetness as the day revolves (along with Andie MacDowell). But more than the genre crisscross, it's a candid re-examination of life and the many possibilities one can strike when trapped in the time capsule.

The whole Groundhog Day may turn out as a rehab stint for Phil, but for viewers, the individual realization of stepping into Phil's shoes is the residue of the chuckles cracked. Finally seeing GROUNDHOG DAY is really (pun intended) a day well spent.
