Review of Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) by Ahmed F — 03 Apr 2010
An unimpressive dark comedy which has inexplicably become a cult classic, "Grosse Pointe Blank" suffers from a bad script that lets down the performers, who could have been at the top of their game otherwise.
John Cusack plays Martin Blank, an assassin who is losing his passion for hitman-ing. His looming 10-year high school reunion is causing him further anxiety, much to the consternation of his long-suffering secretary (Joan Cusack) and therapist (a wasted Alan Arkin).
Minnie Driver's performance as Martin's former high school sweetheart is another nail in the film's coffin; Driver has rarely been more than passable, and her work in "Blank" is no exception. Why Martin would consider quitting his murderous job for her requires the kind of suspension of disbelief no comedy should have to require of the audience.
