Review of Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) by Louis S — 14 Jul 2010
You know, I need to get something off my chest about this movie's 'spiritual' sequel in War, Inc. I watched about half of the movie like a couple of years ago with a couple of friends at a beach house.
You may ask yourself: "why did I only watch half of War, Inc?" Well the answer is simple, the first half of the movie was actually really beyond god-awful. Just a wretched, wretched first half of the movie.
Sure the movie tries really hard to be a satire, but the humor in that movie was so bad that I actually left the house and I just chilled outside for a bit. That's also the reason why I never reviewed War, Inc here, as I only just watched half of the movie, it would be very unfair for me to criticize the entire movie just on what I watched.
But when I came back in the house, my friends had told me it had gotten better because the movie was so awful. So it was a so bad it's good movie apparently. But since I'll never watch that movie in its entirety, I won't rip it apart, but be warned, the first 45 minutes of the movie just had to be the worst 45 minutes of a movie I've ever seen.
Like I said just wretched. Which brings us to THIS movie, which is GREAT fun. Of course, it's a much more "mainstream" movie than War, Inc appeared to be, so that helped. But it's still a very funny dark comedy.
I just really had a lot of fun watching this movie, it starts out kinda slow with the humor being hit and miss but once it gets going, it's a really funny movie. It's just a very different kind of comedy and it's one of the few "fish out of water" type movies that really works well.
There's just something about a professional killer trying to act like he's normal while at his high school reunion that really works well. Like, for example, that movie with Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac (can't remember the fucking name_ where Ashton's character visits his fiancee's family.
That movie FAILED. In this movie, it feels right. Of course that may be because I'm more into this kind of humor than the humor in that Ashton movie. But yea I like the dialogue in this movie, and the interactions between the main characters was great.
John Cusack is great here, probably his best performance. Also, what the fuck happened to Minnie Driver, she's just sort of disappeared (not literally...DUH) this past decade. Anyway I really liked this movie and it was a lot of fun to watch so hey, I can't complain at all about this movie.
