Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Michael H — 08 Aug 2008
An awesomely deep film, which takes as its starting point a social loner who loves bears to the point of insanity (of course eaten by one of whom he cherishes, a bear that Herzog points out has no discernable expression except dumb, empty hunger).
By the time the film is over though, an incredibly fascinating portrait of Treadwell emerges from his own material, in addition to insights on Treadwell's relationship with his own nature and the human society that, for better or for worse, he clearly doesn't feel a part of.
Truly tragic in many ways, although exemplary of what a great documentary can do.
