Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Simon W — 09 Jan 2009
Werner Herzog is an incredible filmmaker, and in this documentary he does a fantastic job of capturing the life and insanity of Timothy Treadwell, a normal guy who tried to live with grizzly bears and got eaten for it.
You can tell that there are aspects to Treadwell that Werner Herzog admires, and he really portrays those aspects well. Herzog also doesn't pull any punches with the interviews he shows with real experts.
You can tell that they have a hard time controlling their disgust with Treadwell. As for Treadwell himself, the dude was absolutely off his rocker. His monologues were the ravings of a crazy person. Herzog had the best line in the movie when, after hearing from Treadwell all movie how bears were these spiritual creatures, he remarks that he didn't see anything spiritual or compassionate in the bears' eyes, just disinterested hunger.
