Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Diane T — 28 Jul 2010
"Oh my gosh, the bear has left me her poop".
Werner Herzog always seems to find an interesting subject matter. Watching this documentary about a man who decided to live with wild bears in Alaska, one can be very quick to judge, but I believe this film gives the viewer the opportunity to see the root of Timothy Treadwell's decisions. The footage of the Alaska's landscape is beautiful, And Timothy captured amazing footage of bears living in their natural environment over the 13 summers. It is obvious Timothy clearly felt that he wasn't accepted by society, and ultimately had a troubled life. He eventually felt that living with the bears in their environment each summer was the freedom he was looking for. But I don't think Timothy realised that it couldn't possibly last forever, and I believe ultimately he needed a more greater freedom than that. This documentary is a great character study about an eccentric man with a lot of passion, and genuine love for nature. He was misunderstood by many, his emotional state was the result of constant judgment my many, and he was a man that just needed to be loved. Timothy Treadwell I believe had no right to go live amongst wild bears and expect to survive like he thought he would, but it was his choice to go there. He was searching for something, and Alaska was where he could really be himself in an environment that didn't judge him. And that is beautiful in it's own way.
