Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Brian D — 01 Aug 2010
Quite possibly the greatest documentary ever made. This is the true story of the life and death of Timothy Treadwell, a man who really did believe he could be "an island".
After a somewhat troubled childhood and rocky teenage life, Timmy ended up scorning human society and deciding to live in the society of the bears.
I think I just can't believe how enigmatic this film really is. I mean, when you watch this film, you're really seeing a brutally obvious revelation of the inside of a tortured soul. Someone who was so angry and hateful toward his fellow man that he just decided to leave human society to live in a world that made more sense to him.
The fact that Timothy saw the world of the bears as somewhat chivalric really made him identify with the bears and his own image as a real-life hero. There was just something about the push-pull life of civilization that Tim really learned to despise in the deepest recesses of his inner being. His soul seems to scream out at the rest of humankind for not having accepted him, much like he yells out at God in the blind wilderness, demanding rain so that the mother bear won't eat her cubs.
There was something very wrong with Timmy Treadwell. But I think this movie serves as a reminder of what could happen to anyone if they traveled down the road of hating mankind to the point of escape.
RIP Timmy, I hope you found what you were looking for.
