Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Nathan M — 18 Apr 2011
I still don't get what Treadwell was even doing. He repeats again and again how he is protecting the bears and their land, but I saw none of that. He was trying to educate people and he had some kind of grizzly preservation society, but all the time he spent actually living with the grizzlies he didn't seem to be doing anything except hanging out and filming. Even when hunters came around, he refused to confront them. To me, the guy was completely delusional for this and numerous other reasons. He had come to believe he had earned some place amongst the bears simply by camping around them every summer, boasts about how nobody else could do it. He thought he was great. What I saw was a delusional nut case.
It's interesting also because the film is so awkward. So many of the people interviewed have no screen presence. It feels like they're acting for the camera and not doing a very good job of it.
