I'm on a bit of a Herzog kick lately, VERY glad that I finally watched this one. Much sadder than I had expected, but well worth the time to watch it.
(On a side note, one of the monks in Thich Nanh Hanh's Plum Village once told me that this was once selected as one of the monks monthly movie nights.).
