Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Servando P — 06 Jun 2009
Interesting film, and fair play to Treadwell for getting some of the amazing footage he did, but the guy comes over as being pretty disturbed, frequently throwing OTT emo tantrums. The thing that comes out of this seems to be that his affinity for the bears stems not so much from liking them, but from the fact theyre not people.
His failed attempts to become a TV star seem to have made him very bitter and with something to prove. Towards the end of the film there is an ominous sense of his luck running out , the more he rants about how no-one else is tough or smart enough to live so long with bears the more you realise he has become complacent and lost sight of the fact he lives with wild unpredictable animals that dont share the cooing, gushing sentiment for him that he does for them.
Herzog does a good job of portraying him in an entirely neutral light, neither praising him (apart from capturing the footage he did) or mocking him, and credit to him for not cutting some of the interviews that bring up some of the stranger questions about Treadwell and his past.
