Review of Gringo (2018) by Anthony B — 18 Mar 2018
Gringo is muy bueno! Glad I saw this hilarious crime comedy in theaters because the production value is actually really impressive considering it was an indie produced and released by a streaming company.
Fortunately, Amazon Studios commitment to quality is vastly superior to Netflix which appears more concerned with quantity as they release Netflix Original films faster than pornos and on lower budgets.
Gringo does not have much of a plot and the first two acts are mostly build up to a story that is over before it begins but the film is fun, the cast (especially David Oyelowo) is excellent, and the character development is some of the best I've ever seen.
Despite one or two missed opportunities involving the anti-buddy dynamic between Oyelowo's good guy dork and Sharlto Copley's spiritually-conflicted mercenary, Gringo hits the mark consistently and I can't remember the last time I enjoyed going to the movies this much.
