Review of Grindhouse (2007) by Michael V — 06 Nov 2011
A theater experience doesn't get better then this.
Planet Terror.
Not only is this a great entry in horror shlock it's a great tribute/parody of this odd little genre itself. Rodriguez is great when he can stay far away from the shit children stuff he puts out. I get a strange feeling whenever I watch this that it was made for me. No big lead actors that are always featured on tabloids. No romance. No award winning formulas. This is pure kick ass. I remember walking around the independently owned video rental with friends looking for pure trash like this. So I get a great feel of nostalgia when watching this. Back when you actually asked the question how did they make that and the answer would be debate able. Because today that answer will always be CGI. Sad. It delivers on all accounts. The deliberately bad movie. It's all there. The look, atmosphere, tone, dialogue, characters, the synth music cues, the awesomely terrible gore effects and, of course, the purposefully scratched film itself. And the classic missing real scene, and stunning fake movie trailer (at the time) for Machete adds the cherry on the top of it all. This is the best in beer and pizza cinema.
