Review of Grindhouse (2007) by Michael F — 01 Sep 2012
I gave this a 4 out of 5 because Planet Terror is a 4.5 or 5, Death Proof is a 3 or 3.5. I went into Grindhouse not knowing which movie I would favor. On one handis Rodriguez (loved desperado and once upon a time in mexico) and the other is Tarantino (loved pulp fiction and kill bill is in my top movies of all time) so I figured i'd prefer Tarantino's outing because, while planet terror looked like a more visceral experience, a.
) it's tarantino and b.) kurt russell stars. Turns out tarantino's style of writing and direction does not translate well to paying homage to the exploitation movies. Basically exploitation movies could be enjoyed with or without audio because of how visual they intend to be.
they're exploitation because they exploit sex, drugs, and voilence. if you were to mute Planet Terror you could enjoy it almost the same as with sound, but if you muted Death Proof you'd hate it.
Again not to discredit Tarantino but his style didn't work well with the genre. if you're a fan of either director then do everything in your power to see this movie.
