Review of Grindhouse (2007) by Scotts. — 08 Apr 2007
Rodriguez: 5 out of 5. Smart, over the top, thrilling. Planet Terror is the best time at the movies in years, Rose McGowan adds unexpected heart, and the film has something vital to say about the current state of the Hollywood-made feature.
As for Tarantino: a generous 2.5 out of five. Sporadically fun, but too self-aware and chatty. Death Proof may attempt to translate grindhouse for a modern audience, but what grindhouse film would feature 45+ minutes of uninterrupted dialogue? The whole Tarantino shtick (gratuitous pop culture references, self-congratulatory "abrasive" dialogue) was overwrought and, at times, boring.
Add .5 to the rating for the genius coming attraction trailers and to spot-on graphic design/atmospheric touches that deftly re-created the grindhouse experience.
