Review of Grimsby (2016) by Thomas D — 07 Aug 2016
"Hakuna Matata".
Grimsby is utterly vile.
It is one of the most disgusting, nauseating, repugnant and sleazy films I've ever seen, and I laughed....lots.
Grimsby isn't the most sophisticated affair, in fact it isn't really sophisticated at all, but when is Sacha Baron Cohen ever sophisticated? Grimm is what this film starts with from the very first scene, setting the tone pretty well. However, the director Louis Leterrier is fantastic with action sequences specifically in the first person which in a way took a huge tonal vibe from the film, especially when Cohen's character nobby is suddenly CIA official agent. A lot of the plot points in this film are exceptionally rushed and are very lazy, a little insulting you could say. I just have to give props to this film for how incredibly sickening it was, tickles your funny bones frequently. Grimsby takes the audience for idiots, but then again, maybe we should feel that way (or at least me, laughing as much as I did). The brotherly bond is pretty absurd whilst bizarrely charming, it works as a carrier for the film, I just didn't care at all for what was going to happen to our characters, they both end up embracing assholishness and scum to a whole new degree. You can't physically feel anything towards them, not like I did with Borat (another Sacha Baron Cohen persona) or General Aladeen (see previous bracket).
Overall, Grimsby is a filthy romp which is sure to make you laugh, but it has virtually no actual worthy plot or characters. And minus points for ripping off Kingsman slightly.
Poor Dumbo.....
B-.
63/100.
