Review of Grimsby (2016) by James H — 30 Sep 2016
I will say right off the bat this movie has some really hilarious parts, but the film feels like a mashup of just random funny scenes with little to no plot. Nobby (Sacha Baron Cohen) has been looking for his brother for over 28 years.
Nobby grew up to be kinda an idiot basically with 11 kids and a over the top passionate love for football. His brother Sebastian (Mark Strong) on the other hand went off to become a MI6 agent. Nobby and Sebastian's paths eventually cross.
..and that's where the movie goes all over the damn place. There's a ton of gross out gags that happen mixed with a terrible plot involving Rhonda George (Penelope Cruz) a politician that is trying to rid the world of what she calls the scum of the earth aka Nobby's peeps.
It's just dumb. Anywho the two brothers just don't have the chemistry. Cohen is hilarious like usual, but Strong just is a bit too serious in this one. Their background story is never presented in too strong a way that made me feel like they really needed to be reunited.
Overall, this is just a rental if you're interested in Cohen's films. Everyone else this will more than likely be a skip.
