The film opens with the title character, Grigris, as he steps out onto a dance floor to entertain a paying crowd - we watch his unbelievably skinny but agile body as it bends and contorts and our eyes are drawn to his one virtually fleshless leg as he spins it around like a broken stick.

Its a dazzling introduction to the character and the film - one that intrigues you and brings questions to the audience's mind about who this man is and what his world is like. But while the set up of the film is strong, almost immediately it loses its energy and originality.

What follows is a mundane story about Grigris' struggle to earn money for to pay his father-figure's medical bills (a relationship we're meant to be believe is strong though we never get to witness it) and his falling in love with a prostitute - it could so easily have been elevated to greater intensity and simmered to subtler poignancy but somehow never manages to get there.
