Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by Marc M — 29 Aug 2007
Am I laughing at them or with them? Does it matter? These two women are more intersting than most fictional characters in film today. They are full of fire and tell stories from the past as if still living there.
There lies the problem, they appear to be living in the past . They appear to be living on old dreams and lost possibility. Despite the sad living environment and seemingly hopeless future, they appear to be quite content with it all.
It is within this acceptance that we feel comfotable with them and the way they have chosen to live. They never complain about the condition of the house or all the cats and kitty crap on the floor. The seem perfectly content to boil corn on a hot plate next to the bed and eat fish from a can with crackers.
Hey, if they're happy, who are we to judge or even feel sorry for them. The only regtret is that these two once beautiful, sharp debutantes didn't get the chance to be as fabulous as they dreamed they would be.
Little edie never stopped dreaming, which may have been her downfall. If for no other reason, watch to learn about the revolutionary costume - brilliant!!
