Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by Anne F — 17 Jan 2010
A very disturbing documentary about the two Edith Bouvier Beales, aunt and cousin of Jackie Bouvier Kennedy. The two Edies could be politely described as eccentric, they lived in absolute squalor in their dilapidated mansion, surrounded by cats, raccoons and rubbish.
The documentary has no commentary or explanation; one if left wondering why and how two beautiful young women turned out the way they did, living the lives they led. Most of what they said and did was completely inconsequential and very strange, but every now and then one of them would come out with something very sensible.
The film was almost voyeuristic, was very unsettling, and I don't think I'll forget it quickly.
