Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by David J — 01 Feb 2010
I had never before seen a hairless first cousin of Jackie O living in a famous decrepit mansion feed Wonder Bread to cohabitant attic-based racoons, while wearing heels and a headwrap. Now I have. This is apparently an iconic documentary in certain circles, enough so that HBO made a well-received film recreation about Big and Little Edie.
The brood of the uber-wealthy should be forced to endure a mandatory screening of this film, because it shows that while it seems like your life may have no downside, oh man there is really some downside.
Little Edie especially was a wealthy knockout (the pictures from her early 20's wow) and somehow ended up doing what I described in the first sentence in her mid-50's, living with her decrepit mom in their decrepit East Hampton's home, in an advanced state of delusion, sustained only by memories of their faded past and by the foul concoctions of either/or Big Edie's hot pot cauldron or by that what lurks inside a foul looking mini-fridge, mainly ice cream it seems.
