Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by Steve L — 24 Apr 2011
Incredibly noisy, but amazingly touching documentary about a mother and daughter existing in aristocratic squalor. Shamefully cheated out of money that was rightfully theirs and then abandoned to their fate, it's hard to believe these two were close relations of Jackie O.
Presented as a documentary, it comes off more as a play. But it's all the stronger for it. There is no plot to speak of, but we certainly get an insight into their dysfunctional relationship and a glimpse of their fading glamour even amongst all the physical and emotional detritus of their lives.
