Review of Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) by Sean L — 16 Feb 2009
What I love about Joe Dante is that he is so obviously influenced by so many things, that when he fearlessly puts them together, the result is often wholly original and enjoyable. This film is as insane as Looney Tunes Back in Action, and yet it never seems stupid.
When Gizmo gets inspired by Rambo: First Blood Part 2, I don't roll my eyes. It's hilarious and kind of sweet at the same time. I love the smart, professor gremlin. I love the giant gremlin musical number.
I love that Christopher Lee is a mad scientist doing experiments on animals. I love when Phoebe Cates starts to tell another long depressing story about something that happened to her on Lincoln's Birthday.
I love when the gremlins take out the projector and make shadow puppets on the screen. It's great.
