Review of Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) by Ben L — 12 Dec 2009
Perhaps a little too referrential to the cinema industry, this film is still, mostly, enjoyable to watch. I particularly love the scene where gizmo is just watching the plumber trying to fix the water fountain.
Something about him just being curious about humans makes me laugh every time I watch that scene. If you listen to the commentary, Dante was given a carte blanche for this film after numerous scripts were turned down.
Eventually WB gave in and said "Make whatever you want, we need a sequel to this movie" and this was the result. It can be seen as something good or something bad. For me, I am a bit ambivalent about it.
Sure, giving a director carte blanche to do whatever they wanted can be disasterous (metaphorically and literally in this case) but if I was given this chance I have to ask myself would I do anything differently? Apart from make a few jokes funnier and tweak the references to other films, no, I can't say I would.
See this film if total mayhem is something you enjoy.
