Review of Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) by Renzo V — 11 Mar 2014
"THE GREMLINS TAKE NEW YORK".
- 'Gremlins 2: The New Batch' is a 1990 horror comedy by director Joe Dante (Piranha 1978) and sequel to 'Gremlins' from 1984, with returning cast members Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph and of course the adorable Gizmo. Adding to the list are Robert Picardo (Innerspace) and Christopher Lee (Lord of the Rings Trilogy). This time the reptilian monsters are unleashed in a New York Skyscraper. Same ingredients but with a lighter, more comical note. 'Gremlins 2' is also full of references to other films, such as 'Rambo', 'Phantom of the Opera' and 'The Wizard of Oz'. A classic popcorn movie suitable for all ages. Remember the rules?
After the death of Mr. Wing, Gizmo is found by a couple of scientists who take him to the hyper-modern Camp Enterprises in New York. Also working in the building are Billy Peltzer (Galligan) and his fiancée Kate Beringer (Cates). When Billy hears a delivery boy whistling Gizmo's song, he interrogates the man and learns that his Mogwai nearby. Before merciless doctor Catheter (Lee) is able to perform experiments on Gizmo, Billy shows up to save him. Billy will ask Kate to take Gizmo home to their New York apartment, but for the time being Gizmo needs to hide in an office drawer. But when coming into contact with water, Gizmo unleashes a new batch of unmannered Mogwai. And of course, it doesn't take long before these new creatures start to eat and transform into gremlins, who are very eager to go sightseeing in New York. Billy has until sundown to eliminate the monsters. Will he succeed?
