Review of Gremlins (1984) by Jeffrey P — 24 Dec 2011
Cuddly Mogwai Gizmo is Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan)'s new Christmas gift, but break Gizmo's care and feeding rules and he comes with a creepy price. Joe Dante's horror-comedy is all over the place: gentle and sweet enough to lure in tiny E.
T. fans, yet nasty and dark enough to terrify them. It's tough to say what the creatures are supposed to represent: a xenophobe's fears of infiltration from beyond our borders, or forces of nature that America's exploitative culture is too inept to control? On the up side, Chris Walas' creature design and effects work are terrific, and Jerry Goldsmith's score helps to steady the uneven tone.
Wonky fun.
