Review of Gremlins (1984) by Alvin Y — 19 May 2012
In the dictionary, Grenlins means two things; a mischievous invisible being, said by airplane pilots in World War II to cause engine trouble and mechanical difficulties; any cause of trouble, difficulties, etc. I don't see any connection to the story and to the meaning here at all! Anyways, I was entertained, thrilled, and left wanting & expecting more in this film. I found the story to be exciting and yet unique but I felt being too smart about the send ups about the plot. Where do these *gremlins* came and originated from? If they're afraid of light, then they're a vampire right? If they get double in water, then they're now creepy? If you fed them at dawn, they become aliens? What is the point of having this nonsense subplot about Billy's dad inventing stuff that doesn't even help at all in the film? It's a movie with a lot of flaws and a scarier theme/tone that Tim Burton is proud to remake this movie. I just didn't get amaze but don't get me wrong on this one, those little Gremlins are cute but not the big ones!
Just try to make something else that is titled Gremlins, like something that is close to the *real* meaning of this word that I said from the start.
