Review of Gremlins (1984) by Rob A — 20 Nov 2014
Even though Gremlins effects are definitely dated to todays trained CGI eyes, but the type of humor and ambition director Joe Dante put into giving these puppets life creates a nostalgic atmosphere where these type of movies flourished on mostly practical effects and make up much like Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, and list goes on.
The brand of humor appealed to me and the subtlety of some of the other humor made me smile more than the lol moments. "Hey! Your not Rockin'Ricky fans!" The highlight of this hilarious creature feature however has to be the initial Mogwai, Gizmo.
Though not much more hi-tech than a late 1990s Ferbie, Gizmo's charm rubs off harder than any CGI concoction that would undoubtedly be put in the puppets place if it was made today. Any qualms I have goes into the occasional failing site gag or the fact that none of the humans including ridiculously sexy Phoebe Cates are particularly interesting.
This year marks the films 30th anniversary, so do the world a favor and pick Gremlins and Ghostbusters up, light a fire and enjoy these films before CGI wipes out the charm in the years that follow.
