Review of Greenberg (2010) by Soraya B — 20 Jan 2013
I'm very fond of this film. Stiller doesn't create a heroic character in Greenberg; instead we see him for all his somewhat irritating and highly-developed complexes and neuroses. Gerwig's character compliments Stiller's brilliantly as her subtle and unaffected presence contrasts with the highly-strung, misanthropic and disaffected Greenberg.
This film succeeds where it has not window-dressed its' characters or plot. The annoying dullness is meant to be palpable. There is a familiarity to Greenberg's character; perhaps an ominous feeling that maybe we are all potential Greenbergs!? Rhys Ifans also performs very well; providing yet another contrast to the lead character, and also a more balanced insight into some of Greenberg's misgivings.
