Review of Greenberg (2010) by Mike C — 28 Oct 2010
I really wanted to see this, but I think I'm being slightly generous with a 6/10. Stiller, who looks to have lost a lot of weight and resembly Daniel Day Lewis from 20 years ago, is neurotic, selfish, and that's about all I picked up.
I thought from the previews Greenberg was a pretty cool guy but no one knew he was cool and he struggled because of it. I could relate to that ha ha. Instead, Greenberg is not necessarily likeable. I don't care about his problems, and I don't really care about him. Furthermore, I don't really care about his exploits and/or the results and/or his thoughts on them.
The film's saving grace is Greta Gerwig and the awkwardness that it does capture fairly well. Gerwig is kinda nutty herself, but that makes her adorable and she plays the part well. We've all had to deal with awkward moments and people like Greenberg, so yay for getting that on film, but there isn't much else going and so it's still an empty part of the movie.
