Review of Greenberg (2010) by G. Brandon H — 12 Jan 2011
It's nice to see Ben Stiller in a dramatic film. This could have been an even better film if the screenplay was a little more fine tuned in terms of character, but it was still a very good movie. The screenplay really stuck out. I really liked how relatable some of the issues and topics of conversation in the movie were. The movie really gave me some nice insight.
Most people call the Stiller character here unlikable and after the first 50 minutes of the movie I couldn't find anything really bad about him. That changed as the film went on. Granted the Stiller character did a few bad things in the movie, but they weren't horrible and his movie was mentally unstable. The rest of the cast was good as well, especially Greta Gerwig. Interesting note: in a scene from I'm Still Here Joaquin Phoenix was in talks to play the best friend of Greenberg (Ben Stiller). Of course, Stiller was in on the joke.
This was a good movie. It was funny at times and served as a nice character study. I hope Stiller continues to explore dramatic roles, he can be a good actor if the material is right.
