Review of Greenberg (2010) by Laimis Z — 25 Apr 2011
"Greenberg" 10 Scale Rating: 4.0 (Below Average) ...
Sometimes a movie will try way too hard to be quirky and different. When this happens, it becomes obvious and ruins what could have been at least a decent film.
Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller) has a host of issues, but is trusted to watch over his brother's home while they are on vacation. While he is doing so, he meets their nanny and assistant, played by Greta Gerwig. The two start an odd up and down relationship.
The thing that really ruins the movie for me was the fact that Greenberg himself isn't even remotely likable. Yeah, the man has issues and this becomes abundantly clear early on ... which is why he has no business being in a relationship to begin with. He has violent and angry outbursts and you don't find yourself rooting for the couple in the slightest.
I had read that this was a different role for Stiller, but I didn't see it. He seemed like classic Ben Stiller to me. Don't get me wrong, I like Stiller, but he didn't fit well with what they were trying to do here.
Considered one of the better movies of 2010 by many, I was disappointed and wouldn't suggest it to anyone.
