Review of Green Street Hooligans (2005) by John W — 24 May 2009
I'm more than impressed with this film simply because I know of a member of a football Hooligan group personally (not an actor out of the film, an old friend of mine).
So, here's where I waffle on about the film....
*Ahem*.
OMG! Absolutly fantastic film! Seriously!
Not just because it's British but it shows the life of gang's (what 'they' call 'firms' - in the film) and Football Hooligan's...
Through my eyes it shows respect for the members of the gang, a.k.a GSE (Green Street Elite) and how they look after one another.
Matt (Elijah Wood) you would never think he'd get involved in such a violent gang. Simply because he seems such a 'goody goody' being a Harvard student and all (even though he did get expelled from Harvard because of his room-mates fault, he took the flack for it).
The head of GSE is his sisters brother-in-law Pete (Charlie Hunnam) who takes Matt under his wing and shows him the 'tricks of the trade' and how passionate he is about being the head member of GSE. Then Pete ends up finding out about what Matt really studied at Harvard. He goes ape at him, because Journo's (Journalists) where one of few people they have hatred for, but then gives him a second chance to prove he's worthy of the gang's respect and how passionate he is to become a member of GSE and is NOT a journalist!
This film actually made me cry. Pete's brother was the Major of GSE (The Major was the top man in GSE) but quit when in his past he was fighting with the MillWall gang (which is an actual area in the UK) The head of the MillWall gang had taken his 12 year old son along and unfortunatly got killed within the fight between MillWall and GSE. So, the head of MillWall gang wanted revenge. Thats when the Major (Petes older brother) quit. Simply because the boy died in the fight, even though it was the other gangs son, not his own.
A GSE member known as Bower, gets a little jealous of this Matt that seems to be getting all the attention...he turns to the MillWall gang and fixes his own GSE gang up saying they were in this particular pub so they'd do damage to Matt (a.k.a The Yank) Unknown to Bower when they get to the pub, the MillWall head member knocks him unconscious and the gang trash the pub and set it on fire. The MillWall head, Tommy Hatcher wanted revenge on The Major because of the death of his son...He leathers the Major and sticks a broken bottle into his throat, at deaths door he's rushed to hospital and fortunatly survives but because Hatcher had nearly killed Pete's older brother (The Major) he wants revenge on Hatcher so they arrange to meet somewhere more quiet away from the 'pigs' (a.k.a Police) They meet, atleast 30 men in each gang and they fight...Obviously Pete's radar is fixed on Hatcher and lay's into him, Hatcher gets the best of Pete and seriously beats him up. But Pete gets up and coaxes Hatcher to 'finish him off' and unfortunatly he does beat him to death...thats when I started crying! V___V.
Obviously there's more to the film, but that just gives you a general idea...
Will HAVE to buy Green Street 2 (even though it is not the same actors).
Highly recommended for those with strong stomachs, those who like a violent film and those who love the British! xD.
Brilliant!!!!!
